Contest for Young Writers and Artists

 

MYABC is pleased to announce the Month of the Young Adolescent Artwork and Writing Contest for the 2009 – 2010 school year. MYABC would like to invite Middle Years students province-wide to submit their artwork and their writing. This contest aims to provide students with the opportunity to express their thoughts and ideas about a different theme each year.  Contest categories and awards are as follows:

THEME:


The theme for this year’s contest is POSITIVE ROLE MODELS. 
Students can choose from one of the following topics:

  • Explain how an athlete can be a positive role model.  Highlight an athlete who is a positive role model for you.  Describe their positive attributes.  Explain what you can learn from their example and how you can or have applied it in your own life.
  • Explain how a friend can be a positive role model.  Highlight a friend who is a positive role model for you.  Describe their positive attributes.  Explain what you can learn from their example and how you can or have applied it in your own life.
  • Explain how a family member can be a positive role model.  Highlight a family member who is a positive role model for you.  Describe their positive attributes.  Explain what you can learn from their example and how you can or have applied it in your own life.
  • Explain how a teacher can be a positive role model.  Highlight a teacher who is a positive role model for you.  Describe their positive attributes.  Explain what you can learn from their example and how you can or have applied it in your own life.
  • Explain how an author can be a positive role model.  Highlight an author who is a positive role model for you.  Describe their positive attributes.  Explain what you can learn from their example and how you can or have applied it in your own life.
  • Explain how an artist can be a positive role model.  Highlight an artist who is a positive role model for you.  Describe their positive attributes.  Explain what you can learn from their example and how you can or have applied it in your own life.
  • Explain how a television personality can be a positive role model.  Highlight a television personality who is a positive role model for you.  Describe their positive attributes.  Explain what you can learn from their example and how you can or have applied it in your own life.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR WRITING AND ARTWORK:


WRITING: Submissions must be a minimum of 300 words for the grade 6/7 category and a minimum of 500 words for the grade 8/9 category. Writing can be printed, hand-written or typed.  FRENCH IMMERSION submissions will also be accepted (in the same category as all other submissions).
Submissions will be judged in the areas of meaning, style, form and conventions, in accordance with the BC Performance Standards Quick Scale for Personal Writing.  The Grade 6 Personal Writing Quick Scale will be used for the Grade 6/7 category and the Grade 8 Personal Writing Quick Scale will be used for the Grade 8/9 category.  Quick Scales are available on the BC Ministry of Education website.  It is expected that submissions are revised, edited and proofread.
 
2-DIMENSIONAL ARTWORK:  Submissions must be accompanied by a (minimum 50 word) paragraph explaining how the piece relates to the theme. Students can choose to use any medium they wish. Submission size can range from 8 1/2 X 11” to 11 X 17”.
Submissions will be judged on how well the artwork relates to the theme as well AND on the paragraph that accompanies the piece.  The paragraph will be judged according to the criteria and Quick Scales noted above. 


All writing and artwork submissions must be accompanied by an entry form. They must be mailed to the address on the entry form and must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010.


Winners will be announced in April 2010.  All submissions will be returned to schools in May.  All participants will receive a certificate.

WHERE Challenge!

The WHERE Challenge is a national contest endorsed by the Canadian Earth sciences community that asks students aged 10 - 14 years to discover the answers to these questions: What on Earth is in your stuff and WHERE on Earth does it come from? There are thousands of dollars in regional and national prizes to be won and you can enter as a group, an individual or a school.
